To finish off we’d like to share a case study of some medical education OERs that were developed by a student who worked with us on our Doctor as Digital Teacher student selected component (SSC) in the undergraduate curriculum at Dundee. This student had an interest in ENT and wanted to learn more about the larynx so chose to develop a learning resource in this area.  She had a clear idea that she wanted to create some videos and started off by developing scripts for a series of 3 videos.  These were reviewed by one of our ENT surgeons and once these were signed off, work began on developing storyboards, visuals and planning some filming.

The anatomy of he larynx was going to be central to the videos and there was a particular interest in using a 3D model.  With the SSC only running for four weeks developing a 3D model of the larynx from scratch wasn’t feasible but our medical artist was able to source a Japanese site BodyParts 3D with 3D models licensed under a CC licence which allowed modifications as long as the derivative model was shared on the same basis as the original.  She was able to build on the original model and share with the student who could then build on this further by filming and adding labels and including in her series of videos.

The modified model of the larynx was published and shared as a new derivative OER on sketchfab. It’s been downloaded by many other educators and some of these teachers have also 3D printed the model. You can see the model here.

The teaching videos which incorporated the model were then published on Vimeo and the first in the series is embedded below.  Whilst the 2D images were shared on Flickr and you can see we included this as the featured image on this page and have included the attribution.
